5th International Middle East Symposium begins

Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU) will host the 5th International Middle East Symposium. Within the scope of the symposium titled as ‘Re-reading History and Identity in the Middle East’, many local and foreign scientists will come together. The symposium is organized with the partnership of IGU and the Turkish Historical Society.

Symposium on the topics such as 'Media and Peace Language', 'Power, Authority and Peace', 'Revolutions, Coups and Political Stability', 'Religion, Sects and Religious Understanding', 'Arab Spring, Political and Social Stability and Peace' will be open to all participants from April 9 to April 11.

“TERROR AND DEMOCRATIZATION PROBLEMS IN THE MIDDLE EAST IS RISING”

Head of the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the IGU Prof. Dr. Şenol Durgun stating that the Middle East has become the center of attention of international politics due to the ongoing conflicts and disagreements as well as the regional and global power struggle, added: “The presence of different ethnic groups in the region, the rise of the problems of terrorism and democratization, the struggle of the regional-global powers in the region have led to an increase in academic studies towards the Middle East. However, the fact that these studies use concepts which are born in Western, such as nation-state, modernization, cause the region to miss the unique dynamics, political fault lines and identity richness. This makes it difficult to construct a political, economic, social and intellectual ground that will be designed according to the specific conditions of the region and will establish permanent peace in the region.”

“THE STUDIES MUST BE ORIGINAL TO THE REGION”

Stressing that the region like the Middle East has its own Dynamics, Durgun said: “In order to understand the region, it is not enough to use the theoretical accumulation produced in the West alone or to adapt the elements that have been part of the historical development of developed countries directly to this region. In order to make the region stable and peaceful, there is a need for studies that take into account the specificity of the region”.

“WE WILL CREATE NEW READINGS TO PROVIDE PERMANENT PEACE”

Stating that they will organize the symposium in this direction Prof. Dr. Şenol Durgun said: “In the symposium with contributions of academics from both Turkey, as well as outstanding researchers from different regions, especially the Middle East we aim to explore a new history and identity reading that will ensure the establishment of a lasting peace in the Middle East over historical dynamics in the Middle East; Identity formation processes of Middle Eastern peoples; conflicts caused by evaluations made within the framework of nation-state and modernization.”
The deadline for the abstract submission to 5th International Middle East Symposium is February 11.
