IGU Met With Middle School Students

The robot designed by the students of Gökkuşağı College Bahçeşehir Campus at the Istanbul Aerospace and Technology Festival attracted the attention of İstanbul Gelişim University (IGU). Vice Rector of IGU Prof. Dr. Ali Okatan, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture Prof. Dr. Mustafa Bayram and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Abdulkadir Gayretli met the advisor and students of the project at the Avcılar Campus of the university.

Yusuf Sezikli the project supervisor, of the Gökkuşağı College Bahçeşehir Olympic Team, stated that they are working in line with the capabilities of the children. He also added: “We are preparing them for Turkey and international level competitions throughout making projects  on math, science and computer studies in the fields as they want. In this project, our children designed a robot that can be controlled with kinect and voice. The name of our project is ‘Robot in Each Class’. With this project, the children designed this robot to be a resource for the teacher in the course of the lesson.”

“WE CAN CONTROL THE ROBOT WITH OUR HAND MOVEMENTS”

Asım Aktaş, a senior student at Gökkuşağı College who spoke about their project, said:

“We started this project with the idea that we should necessarily use the technology to go further in order Turkey not to lag behind the technological age. According to the researches of education experts, the use of technology in lessons increases motivation in education. For this reason, we have prepared this project. We can control our robots with both sound and hand movements. We tested this robot with the 5A class of our school. We received the opinion of both our teachers and our friends. Our student friends listened to the course with pleasure and said they wanted to do such a robot themselves. Our teachers said that such a robot in the lessons increased the attention of students and efficiently said that the course.”

Aktaş providing information about the project software phase stated: “We are connecting to the robot with a specific program. We can get the coordinates of the human body and start and stop the engines. For example, if our right hand is above our head, it means that the right engine should move to the right. We receive voice commands with microphones on Kinect”.

“ROBOT DEVELOPING PROJECTS WILL BE WIDESPREAD”

IGU Faculty of Engineering and Architecture Dean Prof. Dr. Mustafa Bayram exprssed that, “We have developed many robots as faculties by this time. We've received degrees in robot racing. Our young people are making better advanced robots every day using the possibilities of technology. In the future, they will be a good engineer for their country, homeland and nation, they will make a great contribution to the development of our country.”

IGU Vice Rector and Responsible for TTO (Technology Transfer Office) Prof. Dr. Ali Okatan said: “Robot development work will become more widespread and will be done continuously. Our age is the robot age. We are ready to give all kinds of support to young people as TTO”.

“WE SUPPORT SCIENTIFIC PROJECTS”

IGU Chairman of the Board of Trustees Abdulkadir Gayretli stating that as a university, they have signed many technological and scientific projects, added: “We encourage our academic staff and students to make scientific projects and support all projects. As IGU with 200 patents we are in the position of Turkey's most popular universities. I appreciate this project of our junior high school students. We are ready to provide all kinds of support during the development of the project”.
