Professor Dr. Auode was the guest of ‘Modern Political Thought’ course

Prof. Dr. İbrahim Aoude, one of the participants of the 5th International Middle East Symposium organized with the cooperation of Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) and the Turkish Historical Society, met with the students of IGU Department of Political Science and International Relations.

Professor at the University of Hawaii Ethnic Studies attended the conference Dr. Ibrahim Aoude met with the students of the Department of Political Science and International Relations. Within the scope of Modern Political Thought lesson, he discussed Orientalist theory with the students by referring to the works of Palestinian American thinker Edward Said.
 
In his presentation, which started with the definition of post-colonialism as a social theory, he gave information that the concept of orientalism came from Edward Said's work of the same name as of origin. Auode said in the presentation:

“Orientalism is a concept used by western societies in relation to countries in the Middle East, Asia and North Africa. For the Orientalists, the main purpose of Western societies is to civilize them because the Eastern societies are not sufficiently developed. However, on the other hand, the identity of Western societies, including the academy, is built on their attitudes on East.”

Relating the issue of Orientalism to the Palestinian problem Palestinian descent Prof. Dr. Auode advised IGU students to read the Said’s books ‘Palestine Problem’ and ‘Islam in the Media’. At the end of the presentation he was also concerned with answering questions of students on Israeli - Palestinian conflict and the US - Turkey relations.
