The age of 65 and above approves the restriction

In the study conducted with 120 elderly people with an average age of 68, the elderlies were asked what they think of the restriction ban applied. In the research, it has been revealed that 60 percent of the elderlies approve application of the isolation process to vulnerable groups and the elderlies.

Prof. Dr. İsmail Tufan, founder of Tazelenme University which is the Turkey's first and only university of the elderly and provide education without profit making purpose and Gerontology Science, conducted a research with Lect. Gerontologist F. Sıla Ayan from Istanbul Gelisim University School of Health Sciences. According to the research conducted with the participation of 120 students of Tazelenme University with an average age of 68, 56 percent of the elderly consider the curfew applied to them as a right decision. According to the research, only 27 percent believe that there will be a decrease at elderly deaths, while 52 percent of the elderly agree that the curfew decision set for them is fair.

27 PERCENT BELIEVE THAT THERE WILL BE A DECREASE AT ELDERLY DEATHS

Sıla Ayan who shared the details of the research said: “While approximately 33 percent believe that the curfew will have negative effects on the perception of older people in the society, about 42 percent think that it will have a positive effect on the perception of the elderly. 52 percent of the elderly who participated in the research agree that the curfew decision set for them is fair. On the other hand, only 27 percent believe that it will cause a decrease in elderly deaths.”

50 PERCENT IS SATISFIED WITH THE SUPPORT

Stating that the collaboration with Vefa groups (supporter group in the coronavirus pandemic process) has positive effects on the elderly, Ayan spoke: “We see that they do not feel dependent even when more than 50 percent of our elderly overcome the deficiencies resulting from isolation with social solidarity and even they are satisfied with the support.”

THEY TRY TO ADAPT TO THE NEW AND CHANGING WORLD

Saying that according to the latest data of TURKSTAT, internet use has increased almost three times among the elderly in the last 15 years, Ayan stated: “We see that a generation that we define as digital immigrants and try to adapt to digital developments can now fulfill the need to socialize from home through a number of applications, smart phones and video calls. They are trying to adapt to the new and changing world. As a society, we need to update ourselves.”

40 PERCENT IS INDECISIVE

According to the results of the research, Ayan stated that 40 percent of the people were acting indecisive and said as follows:
“The indecisive group is also very high. In particular, nearly 40 percent were hesitant to answer questions whether they were right or wrong. It is possible to say that we are in the transition period now and the studies on this subject should be increased and intensified. Currently, there is a source of stressors, and our elderly are in the process of adopting an attitude to adapt and manage it. WHO states that this process may be prolonged when this process gradually becomes a lifestyle.”

WE NEED TO AWARE MORE

Indicating that society should act more consciously for people over 65, Ayan said: “We need to be more conscious. We need to avoid panicking at such crisis points and do not think as the weakest link, and evaluate the opportunities of aging rather than isolating them. Because this is a solvable and manageable process. Our elderly generally think that the decision is right. They improve individual efforts to develop adaptation mechanisms for this right decision."
