Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) will host ‘Turkish Language in the New Communication Media: Current Problems and Term Suggestion Workshop’ with the cooperation of Turkish Language Association (TDK) and with the contributions of Istanbul Okan University and Turkish Informatics Association. At the end of the workshop, determinations related to the current concept problems of different fields will be revealed and Turkish term suggestions which can be used instead of foreign language origin terms will be presented.

IGU Asst. Prof. Dr. Deniz Akçay from the Department of New Media said that with the development of communication technologies, both new concepts in traditional fields and new research and study fields emerged.

Akçay said: “At this point, terms from Western languages are used. This can lead to confusion of meaning, accidents of meaning and difficulties of expression in introducing these areas to other segments of society.”

IGU Head of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature Asst. Prof. Dr. Pelin Ekşi, stating that they would brainstorm to produce Turkish words, said as follows:

“The workshop, which is organized in cooperation with Istanbul Gelisim University the Department of New Media, the Department of Turkish Language and Literature, Istanbul Okan University the Department of Public Relations and Advertising, and Turkish Language Association, aims to make Turkish word suggestions for the terms of the disciplines and professions that use new communication media. Workshop areas were identified as “Industry 4.0 and Artificial Intelligence”, “Society 5.0”, “Digital Reputation”, “Digital Media” and “Cyber Security”. We will discuss the basic conceptual problems and brainstorm these concepts to produce Turkish ones of the major terms that our language that do not have any equivalent.”

Okan University Head of the Department of Public Relations and Advertising N. Hanzade Uralman, one of the coordinators of the workshop, stated:

“In the workshop, many important people in the field such as Head of TDK Gürer Gülsevin, TDK Director OF Scientific Studies Exp. İrem Işıl Altun, TDK Member of Science Committee Prof. Dr. Ayşe İlker, TDK Member of Science Committee and TDK Member of Current Turkish Dictionary Branch Prof. Dr. Ahmet Günşen will work as language consultants in the working groups.” 

The workshop will be held at the campus Avcılar Gelisim Tower of Istanbul Gelisim University on December 3, 2019.
