Unemployment is another cause of cancer!

Assoc. Prof. Gülgün Çiğdem, who has carried out studies called the Crisis-Cancer Cycle (CCC-Crise Cancer Cycle), in her multidisciplinary studies in which she questioned the relationship between poverty and cancer incidence in the United States, questioned whether there is any relationship between unemployment caused by crises and cancer incidence this time by taking Turkey into account.

According to her research, Çiğdem has added a new one to the known risk factors of cancer and stated that unemployment is one of the causes of cancer.
Assoc. Prof. Gülgün Çiğdem's original empirical study entitled "The Crisis-Cancer Cycle in the Shadow of COVID-19: Evidence from Turkey" has been published in the World Cancer Research Journal (WCRJ) in Italy.

In her multidisciplinary studies, which she named the Crisis-Cancer Cycle (CCC-Crise Cancer Cycle), in which she questioned the relationship between poverty and cancer incidence in the United States, Çiğdem this time examines Turkey and examines whether there is a relationship between unemployment caused by crises and cancer incidence. Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Çiğdem has determined a unidirectional causality between the variables as a result of the analyzes performed for Turkey. Çiğdem says, "Accordingly, unemployment is a Granger cause of cancer incidence."

“UNEMPLOYMENT OCCURING DURING CRISIS IS ANOTHER CAUSE OF CANCER”

Çiğdem continues her speech as follows:

“According to the study, there is a more critical cycle in the shadow of COVID-19. The measures taken to survive during the COVID-19 process and to prevent the spread of the pandemic create mass unemployment. As revealed by this study, unemployment that occurs during crisis periods is another cause of cancer. In addition, according to research shared by the American Association for Cancer Research, cancer increases the death rate from COVID-19 three times more. Some types of cancer are at risk of increasing COVID-19 complications, according to the statement.”

“IT WILL BRING MUCH HEAVY HUMAN AND FINANCIAL BURDEN ALONG”

Stating that the COVID19 pandemic process started with a health crisis and turned into a global economic depression, Çiğdem says, “Unemployment and poverty, which are between two sharp ends, COVID-19 and cancer, are important macro-economic phenomena that should be prevented with policies. Failure to take the necessary steps in this process will bring much heavier human and financial burdens.”
