A Major Achievement for IGU under TÜBİTAK 3005: Project on Post-Disaster Housing Solutions Receives Funding

Istanbul Gelisim University has added another significant achievement to its nationally recognized record of academic productivity. The project titled "A Model Proposal for Post-Disaster Temporary Housing Unit Design for Different Regions of Türkiye," in which Asst. Prof. Hande Apak from the Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department of IGU's Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA) and Assoc. Prof. Sezgin Savaş from the New Media and Communication Department of the Faculty of Economics, Administrative, and Social Sciences (FEASS) serve as researchers, has been selected for support under The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK) 3005, Innovative Solutions Research Projects Support Program in Social Sciences and Humanities. Istanbul Gelisim University management congratulates Asst. Prof. Hande Apak and Assoc. Prof. Sezgin Savaş on this valuable project selected for TÜBİTAK 3005 support, and wishes them continued success in their academic endeavors.

"We Aim to Produce Sustainable and Livable Solutions"

Asst. Prof. Hande Apak from the Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department of IGU's FFA, in her assessment of the project, emphasized that this study goes beyond producing purely physical solutions in post-disaster processes, and offered the following statement:

“It is a great source of pride for us to be channeling our university's deep scientific potential into disaster management, one of our country's most critical challenges, across both technological and social dimensions. I believe this project, which brings permanent, sustainable, and academically rigorous thinking to post-disaster recovery processes, will provide an invaluable vision for our public institutions. On this occasion, I warmly congratulate all the academics on our research team and wish us every success on our scientific journey.”

"A Project That Will Make Important Contributions to Academic Literature and Practice"

Assoc. Prof. Sezgin Savaş from the New Media and Communication Department of FEASS drew attention to the scientific dimension of the study, stating:

“In a geography like Türkiye, which faces multiple disaster risks, one-size-fits-all solutions are insufficient. This project aims to propose a new model for post-disaster housing systems by analyzing the specific dynamics of each region through a scientifically data-driven approach. In this respect, it will make important contributions to both the academic literature and to practice.”

A Scientific and Regional Approach to the Reality of Disaster

The project aims to develop a region-based design model for post-disaster temporary housing units suited to Türkiye's varied climatic and geographical conditions. The study will address multiple disaster risks and climatic conditions together, with the goals of creating a scientific decision-support infrastructure for temporary housing solutions, and developing more flexible and sustainable design models tailored to the geographical and socio-cultural characteristics of each region, going beyond the uniform housing solutions applied to date.

A Strong Multidisciplinary Team through Academic Collaboration

The project, carried out with the contributions of IGU academics Assoc. Prof. Sezgin Savaş and Asst. Prof. Hande Apak, is led by Asst. Prof. Elif Özer Yüksel from Gebze Technical University.
The project features a strong, multidisciplinary research team including academics from Gebze Technical University and Uşak University, with advisory roles fulfilled by Prof. Nilay Coşgun and Prof. Nesrin Alptekin. This collaboration, bringing together experts from different universities, enhances both the scientific and applied strength of the project.

Strong Support from IGU for Scientific Productivity

Istanbul Gelisim University continues its scientific productivity through academics engaged in national and international projects. This project, supported under TÜBİTAK 3005, once again demonstrates IGU's strong academic vision in the areas of disaster management, sustainable design, and societal benefit.
