Prof. İsmet Çavuşoğlu's Solo Exhibition "Vicinanza / Nähe" Opens in Italy

"Vicinanza / Nähe," the 85th solo exhibition by Prof. İsmet Çavuşoğlu, a faculty member in the Graphic Design Department of Istanbul Gelisim University's Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), has opened to art lovers in the city of Aosta, Italy. Bringing together abstract and figurative elements, the exhibition reinterprets the concept of "closeness" through an aesthetic language on the international art stage. Organized by Estopia Art Gallery and carrying the title "Vicinanza / Nähe" (Closeness), the exhibition presents the artist's distinctive style, which brings together different disciplines and cultures, to an international audience. Drawing on the multilingual and tourist-friendly character of Aosta, nestled at the foot of the Alps, the exhibition will be on view until May 30.

“Closeness Is a Metaphorical and Poetic Concept”

Explaining his choice of "closeness" as the theme for the exhibition, Prof. İsmet Çavuşoğlu noted that the theme represents both a geographical and an artistic convergence. Çavuşoğlu drew attention to the intellectual foundation of his practice with the following words:

“Because the region has an international character and is tourist-oriented, we developed the concept of 'closeness’ in two languages together with the gallery directors. The concept of closeness represents my artworks. When we look at developments in world art, geographical location no longer seems to matter. 'Closeness' is a metaphorical and somewhat poetic concept. Art needs to be viewed as a whole.”

A Convergence of Different Styles

Noting that he foregrounds spatial and perceptual relationships in the 30 works featured in the exhibition, Çavuşoğlu described how he constructs his abstract expressive language in the following terms:

“Abstract expression and abstraction dominate my work. From time to time I also use realistic elements alongside these approaches simultaneously. Sometimes I combine two or three styles, and this aligns with the concept of 'closeness.' Within the same frame, I believe that proximities lend strength to one another.”

Academic and Artistic Production in Parallel

Prof. İsmet Çavuşoğlu, who has sustained his academic career and artistic production in parallel for many years, also spoke about the positive effect the university environment has on his art. Noting that the work he carries out within IGU FFA nourishes him, the artist said:

“Working with young artists means renewing myself, being nourished. I am inspired by the motivation and original ideas of young people. I believe that working at the university has a positive effect on my art in every respect.”

Çavuşoğlu also expressed his appreciation for the contribution of entities such as the Gelişim Art Gallery and SATMER within IGU to the artistic atmosphere.

An Aesthetic Bridge between Father and Son Artists

Another notable dimension of the exhibition was the artistic connection established with Prof. Ergin Çavuşoğlu. While Ergin Çavuşoğlu's exhibition continues at Estopia Gallery’s Lugano branch, an aesthetic bridge was created through a reciprocal exchange of works between the two exhibitions.

Described by Italian art lovers as “simple, charming, and original”, the exhibition has been recorded as one of the significant stops on Çavuşoğlu's journey through Europe's art centers.
