A Symbolic Beginning for Tomorrow's Occupational Safety Specialists at IGU: The 2nd Hard Hat Ceremony
The “A Symbolic Beginning for Tomorrow's Occupational Safety Specialists: 2nd Hard Hat Ceremony” organized by the Occupational Health and Safety Program at Istanbul Gelisim Vocational School, was held to strong student attendance. In addition to Occupational Health and Safety Program students, numerous students from different programs within the Vocational School attended the event, held at the Istanbul Gelisim University Section G Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar Conference Hall.
Emphasis on Professional Identity and Safety Culture
The event was coordinated by Occupational Health and Safety Program Chair Asst. Prof. Kaan Koçali. In his opening remarks, Koçali drew attention to the critical role of the occupational health and safety profession in working life, the societal importance of a culture of safe working, and the professional responsibilities students will assume in the future.
Addressing themes of professional belonging, ethical responsibility, and awareness of practical application in the field, Koçali emphasized that students' development with not only technical knowledge but also a strong understanding of safety culture is of great importance.
A Message of Professional Support from Academics to Students
Lecturers Şehmus Turan, Vefa Sümeyye Korkmaz, Emine Öztürk Koçali, Efe Erin, and Türker Yapan, all of whom teach in the Occupational Health and Safety Program, also attended the event.
The program’s academics came together with students and emphasized that the Occupational Health and Safety Program at Istanbul Gelisim Vocational School has a strong academic family structure. It was also stated that students will continue to be supported not only during their studies but also in their professional lives after graduation.
A Symbolic First Step into the Profession with the Hard Hat Ceremony
The hard hat ceremony, symbolizing the first step toward a professional identity, was organized to raise students' awareness of occupational health and safety, strengthen their sense of professional belonging, and emphasize the importance of a culture of safe working.
As part of the program, students received information on the strategic importance of occupational safety expertise in working life, the role of safe working awareness in sustainable professional life, the duties and responsibilities to be assumed in the field, and professional ethical values.
The ceremony underscored that the hard hat is not merely a piece of personal protective equipment, but also a powerful symbol of responsibility, awareness, professional identity, and a culture of safe working. Students made a meaningful and symbolic start to their professional journey through the hard hat ceremony.
Plaques Presented to High-Achieving Students
As part of the event, plaques were also presented to students who ranked in the top three for academic achievement among both the regular and evening instruction students of the Occupational Health and Safety Program.
The recognition of high-achieving students added a special dimension to the ceremony, in terms of making academic effort visible and supporting students' motivation to succeed.
