Prof. Dr. Şenol Durgun evaluating President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's speech at the UN General Assembly and the current UN structure, said, “The current UN structure is working against the Muslim peoples and the countries in general”.
The Head of the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Istanbul Gelişim University Prof. Dr. Şenol Durgun voicing that during the developments in the international arena after World War II the loser is mostly the people living in the Muslim geography, said: "Mr. President, with call for the reform at the latest UN General Assembly tries to accelerate the search for a new global order, as well as to invite Muslim and oppressed people to open a door to strengthen the hand against unfair sanctions, practices in the face of international efforts".
“ERDOGAN SHOWED THAT HE IS THE VOICE OF THE OPPRESSED PEOPLE”
Professor Dr. Senol Durgun, mentioned that “President Erdogan with his speech at the United Nations General Assembly has shown once again that he is the voice of oppressed people on the problems encountered by them in the international. As a matter of fact, President Erdoğan did not only spoke on Syria, Palestine, Iraq and Libya, that concern our region, but also he spoke on problems that took place and currently ongoing in different parts of the world such as the Rwanda and Arakan and tried to bring to the attention of the public.”
“IT CASTS A SLUR ON UN LEGITIMACY”
Evaluating the request for reform UN's structure in the Prezident’s speech Durgun, said: “The President's assessments on this issue are not new. He has expressed his views on this issue on various occasions both at national and international meetings. In fact, the phrase “the world is bigger than five”, which draws attention to this issue, has long been in the international arena as a popular slogan. With this statement, the President states that the structure of the UN designed according to the post-World War II period is insufficient to meet the problems in today's world and to provide solutions to the increasing poverty and injustices, and that the members of the UN Security Council did not create any result other than serving their national interests. As a matter of fact, in the last UN General Assembly, he tried to explain the problem about this issue with the problem of obesity in developed countries, drawing attention to the death of the elderly, children and young people who have died of starvation in underdeveloped countries or a very different example. In other words, Erdoğan, with this speech, expressed that UN is not functioning with the current structure in the face of the increasing income imbalance and unfair practices on a world scale in general, moreover, the Security Council has not created any other result than working for five permanent members, and this has cast a shadow on the legitimacy of the UN.”
“THERE WAS DWELLED ON THE STRUCTURE OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL”
Professor Dr. Şenol Durgun continued his speech with following:
“As noted in the last UN General Assembly, the President emphasized the structure of the Security Council, which he considers as a global force element within the UN. He mentioned that this structure could not produce a solution in today's international problems. He tried to explain this by opening a parenthesis to the Palestinian problem, which was found to be a bleeding wound in the international arena for many years and could not be solved despite the UN resolutions. As you know, the occupation policies of Israel and the human rights violations in the Palestine problem have been going on for many years despite the decisions taken in the UN. Since this is due to the veto power of the UN Security Council member states, it invalidates the international resolution of UN resolutions. Noting that it is not possible to continue a global peace process under these conditions, the President proposes a comprehensive reform to prevent this situation. While the question of what these suggestions should be discussed, at least in the world, every country belonging to every belief or countries belonging to every civilization area should be in the Security Council and have rights like five permanent members, and that they can establish a balanced and justifiable order in the international arena. We can also understand from his speeches at times.”
