UN Decided to Cooperate with Turkish Universities
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which operates in more than 150 countries on policies and strategies to support sustainable development, decided to cooperate with Turkish universities in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNFPA officials first visited İstanbul Gelişim University. University students prepared 10 short films to raise awareness for the Sustainable Development Goals.
In the 10 films prepared by 40 students in the Radio, TV, Cinema Department and Public Relations and Publicity Department of the University, the issue of gender equality and reducing inequalities has been addressed.
“YOUTH HAVE FULL KNOWLEDGE OF THE DIGITAL WORLD”
UN Population Fund Sustainable Development Goals Film Workshop Practitioner Prof. Dr. Nezih Orhon stated that the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) works for a world where every young person can unravel his potential. Voicing that young people have full knowledge of a visual world where they live in Dr. Orhon said: “In order to achieve this goal, UNFPA focuses mainly on 5 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We can list them as healthy individuals, gender equality and reducing inequalities, peace, justice and strong institutions and partnerships.
As UNFPA, we come together with different target groups, especially with different groups to reach these 5 goals. At this point we wanted to be together with the university students, because the young people live in the visual world. These goals can be found in their eyes, how they can give messages and how they can carry these messages, we wanted to revive it. We identified Istanbul Gelişim University as the first stop of this project and the results are really süblime.”
“THEY BROUGHT FORTH QUALIFIED WORK IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME”
Head of the Department of Radio, TV and Cinema at Istanbul Gelişim University Dr. Sinem Tuna emphasized that the students were doing qualified works in a short time. Tuna said, “This project of the UN is a long-term project and we are the first stop of this project. This will spread to other provinces and universities in Turkey. It is very important that we are the first stakeholder with the UN Population Fund. In order to make production more healthy, we realized the project which we limited to 40 students with IGU Radio TV Cinema Department and Public Relations and Publicity Department. Movies were filmed in a half-day period. I am very proud of all our students because they are very qualified to make a production in terms of script, acting and technical sense in such a short time. We are planning to make a collective vision of the movies we filmed at our university.
“WE WANT TO BE THE VOICE OF ALL VICTIMS”
One of the students involved in the UNFPA Project Sema Nur Demirbaş student of Public Relations and Publicity Department said: "I'm really happy to be involved in this project. We talked about the difficulties women face in their lives. We wanted to show how women's dreams are actually suppressed by factors such as mothers, fathers, siblings. There are a lot of people who live in it, and I'm also in it. We had some dreams, and we couldn't reach them. We want to make our voices heard and to be the voice of all victims.
Tuğba Ezgi Tik, a student at IGU Radio, Television and Cinema Department, said: “We tried to draw attention to the gender discourses, behaviors, and actions on women and men. This workshop raised an awareness on me.”
