A notice, titled as ‘’Effects of Ground Strain and Pipeline Orientation on Pipeline Damage During Earthquakes’’ that was contributed by the lecturer Muhammet Ceylan from the Gelisim Vocational School of Construction Technologies of the Istanbul Gelisim University was presented at one of the largest conference in the World ‘’2021-2022 ASCE-UCLA Lifelines Conference’’.

The notice bearing the title of the ‘’Effects of Ground Strain and Pipeline Orientation on Pipeline Damage During Earthquakes’’ was presented at the ‘’2021-2022 ASCE-UCLA Lifelines Conference’’ that is one of the largest conference in the World. Pipelines were damaged in high quantities due to liquefaction caused by the Christchurch earthquake. The conference that the lecturer Muhammet Ceylan contributed as an author from the Gelisim Vocational School of Construction Technologies of the Istanbul Gelisim University was organized online basis on the date of February 02, 2022.

The Geographic Information Systems were used for the works at the said notice where Prof. Dr. Selçuk Toprak from Gebze Technical University, Academic Member Dr. Engin Nacaroğlu from Pamukkale University, and Prof. Dr. Thomas D. O’Rourke from the Cornell University have made contribution thereto.

THE EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF THE PIPE ORIENTATION OVER EARTHQUAKE PERFORMANCES WAS ENSURED

The deterministic study (work) notice of the substructure systems, carried out on the earthquake security, separate earthquake performances of the pipe types (natural gas, petrol, drinking water and similar pipelines), buried intensively in the state of Christchurch, taken place at New Zealand have been brought forth by the use of CBS (Geographic Information Systems). The lecturer, Muhammet Ceylan, who made explanation with relation to the said notice, said:

‘’On February, 2011, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 Mw, occurred in the state of Christchurch of New Zealand has caused massive damages at the drinking water pipelines at the region. Pipelines were damaged in high quantities due to liquefaction caused by the Christchurch earthquake. At the same time, the pipe types and pipe diameters, buried intensively at the region, considerably look like the substructure systems existing in the cities worldwide. The acquirement of regional results through the work so made and evaluation of the effect over earthquake performances of the pipe orientation was ensured.’’

At the notice, presented online, it was underlined that the works pertaining to the effect of the ground movements, occurred in the earthquake at the region, over the pipelines..
