Among the professions of the future, its graduates have no problem finding a job!

Stating that the graduates of the Department of Language and Speech Therapy do not have problems in finding a job, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Asst. Prof. Dr. Deniz Yıldız: "Patience, empathy, good communication skills and problem-solving abilities are of great importance to become a language and speech therapist.''

In the results of the Labor Market Survey of İŞKUR 2023, 'Language and Speech Therapist' was among the professions of the future. Istanbul Gelisim University Head of Language and Speech Therapy Department Asst. Prof. Dr. Deniz Yıldız stated that the profession has  a wide field of study such as the evaluation and rehabilitation of conditions such as language disorders from childhood to old age, stuttering, language and speech problems as a result of hearing loss, voice disorders, swallowing disorders.
 
“Graduates have no problem finding a job”
 
Since it is a relatively new profession in our country, the graduates of the ‘Language and Speech Therapy’ department do not have any problems while finding a job. Asst. Prof. Dr. Deniz Yıldız remarked: "Graduates of the department have the opportunity to work in the relevant clinics of hospitals as well as in private health centers and special education and rehabilitation centers. It is also possible to become an academician with the postgraduate education option for students who aim for an academic career."
 
"There should be patience, good communication skills and empathy ability"
 
Stating that patience, empathy, good communication skills and problem-solving abilities are of great importance for working in the field of language and speech therapy, Yıldız also added, "Language and speech therapists should have the ability to communicate effectively with individuals and apply various therapy techniques. In addition, a strong understanding, observation ability and ability to cooperate in grammar and language development are important.”
 
“The speech and language therapist should be prone to multidisciplinary work”
 
People who are prone to multidisciplinary work are more suitable for this profession. Asst. Prof. Dr. Deniz Yıldız: "Since problems such as mild, moderate or severe learning disability, speech delay, speech disorder, inability to produce sounds, hearing impairment, cleft palate, neurological problems, hearing loss, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorders, down syndrome, dental problems can lead to language and speech disorders. In adults, language and speech therapists need to work in contact with many different disciplines as they need to work in the fields of communication problems, voice problems, disability situations following situations such as neurological problems, paralysis, Parkinson's, dementia, head trauma."
 
"It should be accessible to every patient who needs a language and speech therapist"
 
Stating that language and speech therapy significantly affects the quality of life of people as a process, Asst. Prof. Dr. Deniz Yıldız, "The improvement of functions such as swallowing, voice, and speech supports the independent life of people and the development in these areas positively affects the self-esteem of the person. Hence, it is important that the language and speech therapist is accessible to every patient in need and that the whole process is managed appropriately by competent people in the field."
