Istanbul Gelisim University hosted an event titled "The Secret of Performance: The Intersection of Nutrition and Sports", which addresses the critical role of athlete nutrition on performance. In the event held at Firnas Auditorium, Anadolu Efes Sports Club Dietitian Specialist Dietician Buket Mamur and Beylikdüzü Sports Club Dietitian Nursena Duman shared her professional experiences and conveyed important information in the field of athlete nutrition.
At the event organized by Assoc. Prof. Merve Bayram, Head of Nutrition and Dietetics Department, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Arda Öztürkcan and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Asst. Prof. Yüksel Barut also attended.
Within the scope of the conference, the importance and necessity of athlete dietitian, the dynamics of the profession and the career process were discussed, and the participants had the opportunity to get information directly from the experts in an interactive interview.
"Dietitians should be present in every field of sports"
Emphasizing that athlete nutrition is important not only for professional athletes, but also for amateur clubs and all sports organizations, Dietitian Nursena Duman stated that athlete dietitians play an interdisciplinary role:
“Our identity is a bit more of a wild card. We work in a position that works in partnership with both the doctor, coaches, physiotherapist, and those who have a relationship with the kitchen. In fact, in amateur sports clubs or all other sports clubs, there is a need for an athlete dietician in every field of sports. "
“Real life is more unpredictable”
Providing important advice on the realities of business life for students who will take a new step into the profession, Specialist Dietician Buket Mamur pointed out the necessity of gaining experience as well as academic knowledge:
“When you're a student, everything feels so great. But when you go to work, no matter how well-equipped you think you are, you start out as a fish out of water. Because we are given information in academic terms, but we may fail the class when it comes to the facts of life. The education system is struggling to make us competent, but real life is more unpredictable.”
Pointing out that the access to information provided by technology is a great advantage for students, Mamur said that young people should use these resources consciously:
"You are just at the beginning of the road, I learned by experiencing and living. There are many more resources available to you. You have the internet for example. You have a very valuable technology in your hands and you are better than us. But only if you can use it to your advantage, you'll be a few steps ahead of your peers.”
Revealing the fact that sports and nutrition are inseparable, the event also contributed to students' awareness of the challenges they may face in their career journey. Participants had the opportunity to gain valuable information for their professional development by communicating with experts in their field.
