“Sensory Integration in Pediatric Neurology” seminar was held

Istanbul Gelisim University School of Health Sciences Department of Occupational Therapy hosted the occupational therapist Öykü Su Ünay, in the university's new campus Gelisim Tower. Ünay, who gave examples of “Sensory Integration in Pediatric Neurology” practices, talked about the importance of working together with professional groups such as Occupational therapists, Physiotherapists, Child Developmentists and Electroneurophysiologists in the field of child neurology.

Öykü Su Ünay, who emphasized the importance of family education and the factors that should be considered in sensory integration therapy, made recommendations for the personal and professional development of the graduate candidates before they started the profession. Students from various departments of Istanbul Gelisim University and other universities also attended the seminar.

Expressing that sensory integration is a method used in the treatment of dyslexia in autism, attention deficit, learning disability Ünay said: “It can also be used in cerebral palsy, which results in physical and functional impairment. Contrary to what is known, we don't have only 5 senses in our body. We have 7 sensory systems defined today. Vestibular sensation and proprioceptive sense are more recently defined senses. Various problems arise as a result of processing failure of these two senses, also known as balance sensation and joint motion sensation. The child, who cannot pass environmental stimuli into his sensory processing, cannot give natural and appropriate answers and people with distractibility and learning disabilities come to our attention. Children with sensory processing disorders can be excluded in school and social life”

At the end of the seminar, occupational therapist Öykü Su Ünay was awarded a plaque of appreciation on behalf of Istanbul Gelisim University.
