Expert Warns: The First 48 Hours After Zirconium Coating are Critical!

With its aesthetic appearance, high durability and biocompatible structure, zirconium veneers, which have been frequently preferred in dental treatment in recent years, can be long-lasting with proper care and conscious nutrition. However, small mistakes made in the first days after treatment can lead to big problems. Istanbul Gelisim University Faculty of Dentistry Lect. Feras Haroun made important warnings about dietary habits that should be considered after zirconium coating. Haroun pointed out that especially the first 48 hours are decisive for the success of the treatment, and said that a conscious diet to be applied during this period will both protect dental health and increase the permanence of the treatment.

“Every Bite Carries a Risk Before the Adhesive Hardens”

The adhesives of zirconium coatings do not reach maximum durability immediately after application. For this reason, the consumption of hard and sticky foods in the early period may cause the veneer to dislodge or damage the dental tissue underneath. Stating that foods such as nuts, ice, hard sugars should be avoided in the early period after coating, Haroun added, “Such foods may cause cracks or displacement in the coating in the first days when the adhesive is not fully hardened.” Likewise, he pointed out that sticky foods such as marshmallows, caramel, and gum can also jeopardize the integrity of the coating.

Reminding that every sip drunk in the early post-coating period can affect the aesthetic result, Haroun said, "Zirconium does not stain, but if the adhesive area is exposed to acidic or coloring drinks, especially in the first 48 hours, it may experience a color change. Coffee, tea, cola and energy drinks should also be limited in this process.

"There is no need for strict rules, common sense choices are enough"

Stating that zirconium coatings are not a treatment that restricts daily life, Haroun said, "Common sense choices are enough, not strict rules. After this treatment, patients do not have to abandon all their habits; however, they need to review some behaviors.
Stating that veneers may wear over time, especially in individuals with habits such as clenching or grinding teeth, Haroun recommended the use of night plaque. He added that smoking can also lead to recessions in the gums and leaks at the edges of the veneer.

Pay Attention to Consumption Habits

Since the mouth structure of each individual is different, some patients may experience sensitivity to hot or cold foods. “This is normal. If the veneered tooth is alive or there is gum recession, hot-cold sensitivity is more common. Foods such as warm soup, boiled vegetables, and yoghurt provide a more comfortable experience in this process."
In addition, stating that foods rich in calcium and vitamin D strengthen tooth enamel, Haroun also recommended the regular use of desensitizing pastes and soft-bristled toothbrushes.

When Should You Able To Eat Hard Foods?

The high durability of zirconium does not mean that all foods can be consumed immediately after treatment. According to Haroun, the first 48 hours should be spent on a completely soft diet; semi-soft, easily chewable foods should be preferred for a week. The inclusion of hard foods in the diet should be done carefully and gradually after the second week.
“Although zirconium is a durable material, habits such as chewing ice or cracking walnuts can damage both the veneer and the underlying natural tooth in the long run.

“Zirconium Coating Can Be Used For Lifetime With Correct Maintenance”

Stating that individuals who have zirconium veneers should use dental floss and fluoride oral care products regularly, Haroun recommended going to the dentist at least twice a year:
“Zirconium veneer is one of the most reliable applications that can offer natural dental comfort. However, it is necessary to repay this trust with good care, the right habits and conscious choices. Because the permanence of the treatment is not only related to the success of the physician, but also the responsibility of the patient."

Correct care habits and conscious dietary preferences not only prolong the life of the veneers, but also directly affect general oral and dental health, Haroun's information provides an important guide for patients to complete a process that starts with aesthetic concern with health.
